Cultural anthropologist Shields observed daily life in a home, located in a Northeastern city, whose primarily Jewish residents are ". . . cared for, nourished, protected, kept from harm and, until the end, from death." More scholarly and somewhat more objective than David Oliver and Sally Tureman's The Human Factor in Nursing Home Care (Haworth, 1988), this book combines interviews with residents and staff and the author's field notes along with analysis of her observations. Jaber Gubrium's Living & Dying at Murray Manor (St. Martin's, 1975) remains the classic study of this genre.
